Budget Safari · Adventure
For travellers who'd rather move through Kenya than just look at it from a vehicle window.
LAKE NAIVASHA · HELL'S GATE · MOUNT LONGONOT · CRATER LAKE
A budget-friendly, activity-packed loop through the Great Rift Valley, built for travellers who want to move rather than just watch from a vehicle seat.
It opens with a walking safari among giraffes and zebras on Crescent Island, moves into a 22km cycling safari through Hell's Gate — one of the only parks in Kenya you can pedal straight through — then climbs to the crater rim of Mount Longonot, a dormant volcano rising straight out of the valley floor. A hidden, uncrowded crater lake closes the trip on the final morning.
No technical gear is required for any of it, just reasonable fitness — this is proper activity, not a stroll, but nothing beyond what a fit traveller can handle.
Day by day
A scenic descent through the Rift Valley escarpment by shuttle or private budget transfer, arriving at your lakeside budget camp on South Lake Road.
In the afternoon, a short boat ride across Lake Naivasha to Crescent Island Game Sanctuary for an unguided walking safari — strolling safely among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and impala, since the island has no resident predators.
A 22km cycling safari from the Elsa Gate, riding dirt trails past zebra, giraffe, and warthog with nothing but a bicycle between you and the landscape.
Bikes are parked at the Central Tower ranger post for a guided hike down into Ol Njorowa Gorge, then the day closes soaking tired legs in the naturally heated, mineral-rich waters of the Olkaria Geothermal Spa, inside the park itself.
A short drive to Mount Longonot National Park for a steep, roughly one-hour climb up the slopes of this dormant stratovolcano.
The crater rim delivers sweeping views across the Rift Valley on one side and down into Longonot's forested crater on the other. Energetic hikers can continue the full 2–3 hour loop around the rim; others turn back from the first viewpoint.
Back at camp, a cold Tusker and fresh lake tilapia close out the day.
A morning visit to the Crater Lake Game Sanctuary — an emerald-green alkaline lake tucked inside a small volcanic crater, with uncrowded nature trails and strong birdwatching.
From there, it's a straightforward transfer back to Nairobi, closing out the Rift Valley loop.
