Beach & Coast · Culture
Five hundred years of coastal history within a short drive of your hotel, and the rest of the trip left entirely unscheduled on the sand.
MOMBASA · FORT JESUS · HALLER PARK
Most coastal trips treat Mombasa as a stopover on the way to somewhere quieter. This one treats it as the destination — Fort Jesus and Old Town on one side, Haller Park's reforested quarry on the other, and a beach hotel in between that you're free to never leave on the days you'd rather not.
Fort Jesus is a genuine UNESCO World Heritage Site, built by the Portuguese in 1593 and fought over by Omani, British, and Swahili forces for the next three centuries — the walls still carry the marks of it. Old Town's narrow streets, carved wooden doors, and spice stalls sit just outside the fort's gates, layered with Arab, Indian, and Swahili influence that's hard to find anywhere else on this coast.
Haller Park is the day trip that surprises most people — a former limestone quarry, reforested and turned into a wildlife sanctuary where giraffes take food from your hand and hippos surface a few metres away. It's a very different pace from the fort, and a good midpoint before the beach days take over.
Day by day
Transfer from Moi International Airport to your beachfront hotel on Nyali or Bamburi Beach. The rest of the day is free to settle in and get in the water.
A guided morning at Fort Jesus, walking the ramparts and the small museum inside before continuing on foot into Old Town — carved doorways, balconied Swahili houses, and the spice and curio stalls that line the narrower streets.
Lunch at a local Swahili restaurant is a natural stop before heading back to the beach for the afternoon.
A morning at Haller Park, walking the trails of this reforested former quarry — giraffe feeding, hippo viewing, and a reptile park all within the grounds.
The afternoon is free back at your hotel, with an optional snorkelling trip out to the Nyali reef if the tide allows.
Nothing scheduled — the beach, your hotel's pool, or an optional sunset dhow sail along the coast if you'd rather be on the water than beside it.
A final morning on the beach before transfer to Moi International Airport for your onward flight.
