Two coastal towns with very different personalities — Portuguese and Italian history, a tidal creek, and a canyon that glows red at sunset.
MALINDI · KILIFI · MARAFA
Two coastal towns with very different personalities, seven days to cover both.
Malindi carries visible layers of Portuguese and Italian history alongside some of East Africa's best big-game fishing; Kilifi trades that history for a dramatic tidal creek and a slower, saltwater-and-sand rhythm. In between sits Marafa — Kenya's answer to a canyon, its sandstone walls turning red and orange at the right hour of the evening.
It's a route built for travellers who want the beach to come with something to do, not just something to look at.
Day by day
Check-in at an oceanfront resort, with the rest of the day free to settle in and get a first look at the water.
A half-day out on the water with local fishermen, targeting marlin, tuna, and swordfish — Malindi is regularly ranked among Africa's better big-game fishing grounds.
A walking tour taking in the Vasco da Gama Pillar and the town's old Portuguese chapel, with an easy excuse afterward to track down genuinely good Italian food and gelato — a legacy of Malindi's substantial Italian community.
A dhow sail across Kilifi Creek, snorkelling in the shallows, and a seafood barbecue on the beach to close the day.
A visit to Marafa Canyon, where wind and rain have carved sandstone into red and orange formations that are worth timing for sunset if you can.
Entirely unscheduled — the beach, or an optional windsurfing, paddleboarding, or scuba diving session if you'd rather stay active.
A final breakfast by the ocean before transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
