LAMU ISLAND · SHELA BEACH · MANDA ISLAND

Kenya's oldest living Swahili town, reached by small plane and explored entirely on foot — or by donkey.

Lamu has no cars, which changes the pace of everything. Narrow coral-stone alleys open onto Old Town's mosques and museums, a sunset dhow sail is less an activity than the natural way to end most days here, and Shela Beach next door offers eleven kilometres of near-empty sand for the days you'd rather do nothing at all. A day trip to neighbouring Manda Island adds snorkelling and a sandbank picnic to the mix.

This is a route for travellers drawn to history and atmosphere as much as the beach itself — it rewards slowing down.
